Fingerprint Checks to Be Included in Iowa Insurance Licensing Rules by 2025

Iowa to Enforce Criminal History Screening for Certain Insurance Applicants

A new regulation from the Iowa Insurance Division (IID) will soon add fingerprinting and background checks to its licensing requirements. Starting in 2025, this additional screening will apply to specific applicants and aims to enhance both security and consumer confidence in the insurance space. If you're working toward licensure in Iowa, now is the time to prepare.

Who Is Subject to This Rule?
As per Iowa Code 522B.5A, fingerprinting will be required for:

  • Individuals submitting an initial application for a resident insurance producer license

  • Nonresident producers applying for a new license or line of authority who have not yet completed a background check

  • Applicants attempting to renew, reinstate, or reissue licenses that were revoked or suspended

How Will It Be Handled?
Fieldprint, a recognized fingerprinting provider, will collect biometric data for federal screening purposes. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will then use that information to conduct a separate review at the state level.

Once an application is filed through NIPR, the Iowa Insurance Division will email you with a Fieldprint code and appointment instructions. The applicant is responsible for paying all fees related to fingerprinting and background checks.

Conclusion
This update marks a step forward in ensuring compliance and integrity across Iowa’s insurance industry. Make sure your licensing plan for 2025 includes this new requirement.
